The Barnyard Buddies Fainting Goat herd at the GJF Ranch, a family
owned hobby farm operated by Gary & Janet Farkas located in
Loveland, Colorado.
Goats will be goats and you will witness a lot of head-butting.
This is perfectly natural behavior and you shouldn't be alarmed. A
goat herd is very hierarchically structured and even the females
have a pecking order. Goats are rarely seriously injured from
head-butting.
Fainting goats, also known as Myotonic Goats have a harmless
genetic muscle condition called myotonia congenita which causes
their muscles to temporarily freeze when they are startled or
excited. Fainting goats do not really faint, when this happens they
remain completely conscious and aware the entire time. This
condition is not harmful or painful to the goats.
The pen on camera is where the dams (females) and their babies and
two wethers are kept. Just off to the north is our sire pen where
our breeding stock is kept.
